In 1982, Peter Phillips returned from London to join the established architectural practice founded by his father Orwell Phillips in 1947.
In London, he had worked on the conservation of historic museum buildings including the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and the Museum of Mankind. Since then Peter has specialised in architectural conservation of all types, principally in Sydney and in country New South Wales.
Peter is a member of the Board of ICOMOS International, and was Secretary-General from 2016 to 2019; he has been a member of the ICOMOS World Heritage Panel since 2015. He is a member and past President of Australia ICOMOS, and a member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage (ISCARSAH). He has lectured at the University of Technology, Sydney, and has presented papers at international conferences in China, Japan, Canada and Jordan, as well as in Australia. He is a past Chairman of the RAIA (NSW Chapter) Architecture Conservation Committee, and was a longstanding member of the National Trust’s Historic Buildings Committee. Between 1990 and 1993 he was a member of the Heritage Council of NSW representing the RAIA and RAPI, and from 1984 to 2006 represented the RAIA on the Heritage Council’s Fire Access and Services Advisory Panel (of which he was Chairman for six years). Peter is a former Heritage Adviser to Sydney City Council and still serves on heritage committees from time to time. He is a member of the Association for Preservation Technology International (USA) and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (UK). Peter was admitted as a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in October 2011.
Orwell Phillips was a founding member of the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and the Historic Buildings Committee of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter). He helped to compile the first Register of 20th Century Buildings of Significance in the 1960s, and was a co-author of the RAIA publication “Infill: Placing New Buildings Amongst Old” (1981). He was Honorary Architect to the historic Great Synagogue, Sydney, from 1947, and was the Senior Partner of Orwell & Peter Phillips until his death in 1997.
